November Offers Moviegoers A Much Needed Escape: Thoughts on Dr. Strange, The Accountant and Arrival (Don’t Worry, We Didn’t Spoil Anything!)

shutterstock_170848148RICEBALL SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

No matter what your views are on the recent U.S. election, we here at RiceBall want you to know that we will always provide an open and inclusive space for all. No matter what color you are, where you come from, what you believe in, or who you love….WE will always welcome and accept you. Nerds, non-nerds, UFOs, whomever! Always spread love over hate.

Sooo, it’s that time of the year where S.A.D has set in for most of us on the east coast, and in 2016 we’re finding it very hard to cope. Not only is it cold out, but it also gets dark at 4pm, holiday season is being forced down our throats (in the nauseating form of pumpkin spice and peppermint mocha), ANNND we’re still dealing with the results of a very emotional election season. I. AM. STRESSED. All I want to do these days is snuggle up on a couch somewhere (most likely as Bae’s inner spoon) and sip a hot, chocolate, possibly alcoholic drink. If you’re anything like me, you’re thinking “How the hell did we get here???” To be honest, I’m more than ready to be done and over with 2016. Worst. Year. Ever. And it’s not even frick’in over yet.

Ugh.

Slowly counting down to when I give the realest “Cheers” of my life on New Year’s Day to a bigger, better and brighter 2017 — I know, just keeping hope alive.

Although I haven’t been in the best of spirits all month, I can say that November movies have been ON POINT! I’ve unapologetically spent every weekend in the theater so far and there’s no stopping me. I’ve become a weekend theater bum, watching as many new movies as I can. It’s been worth it. My $10 have been very well spent, every time.

So, what did I watch? Well…

How to Survive (and Conquer) New York Comic-con: 2016 Highlights and Things You Should Know for 2017!

img_2692
Happy to be here at NYCC!

Jeez, we’ve had a crazy couple of weeks over the last few months. We’re all over the map…literally! And it feels like we haven’t stopped to catch a breath! Right after coming back from a mind-blowing adventure in Japan (peep the photos), we were rushing to New York for the FAN-EXTRAVAGANZA…a.k.a., New York Comic-con.

For us, this is an annual escapade. We’re 5 years in and hoping to make it 5 years more — if we survive the ticket process. If you didn’t get to attend this year because you couldn’t snag tickets, here’s a word of advice: the early bird gets the worm (seriously, it does). Also, teamwork makes the dream work! (yep!) Ok. I’m done, lol. Read below for the tips…

NYCC Ticket Tips:

  • Tickets usually get released in June. In recent years, they haven’t shared the actual release date beforehand, so like for Beyonce, BE READY. This usually means by June 1st. Don’t miss the ticket release date, otherwise, your chances will be slim.
  • Follow NYCC on ALL their social media and sign-up for their email list. As annoying as it might be to get their communication blasts, when it’s time, you’ll be totally in the know. They go on communication overload, so just pay attention. They’ll be practically begging you to.
  • Tell your friends. Having friends is VERY important. We snagged tickets because 6 of us logged into the queue at the same time. Only 1 of us got through. And it made all the difference.
  • READ. THE. RULES. They change their ticket rules almost every year. If you don’t update yourself, it’s going to be extremely infuriating for you on ticket day when you can’t get your ticket and you see everyone else bragging about their’s on Twitter (us every year, so far, for SDCC. Hopefully 2017 will be our year! *insert teary eyes*).

Hope these tips help you out for next year! If you still don’t get in after doing all of the above, well, blame the con-gods. You just weren’t meant to go. Sorry.

Betrayed by the Summer Movie Hype… A Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad Review

Does anyone else feel betrayed by the summer movie premieres? All year I’ve been looking forward to Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad, and now that both of these movies have dropped, I’m just so…(sigh)…disappointed.  At first it was upsetting because watching the trailers filled me with soo much JOY. Jared Leto’s Joker laugh was unique and brilliant, and Star Trek‘s plot line looked promising. I mean, it didn’t have my man, BC, but the thought of Captain Kirk and Spock returning to the big screen led to a very special nerd-gasm.

It must be me. Do I just get overjoyed way too quickly with the thought that all my nerdy dreams are finally coming true? How could I be so naive to think that the people behind the curtain would care about accuracy or a thorough and engaging plot line? And that they would find time to represent the characters to how, us fans, know and love them instead of how they think the characters should be interpreted. Silly rabbit.

But I mean, is it a lot to ask? Is it that difficult to represent a character in their true form, or just have plain ole’ good writing? From what I saw over the last two weekends, apparently so. Continue reading “Betrayed by the Summer Movie Hype… A Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad Review”

Hold the Door! The Flash Did What? And X-men Be Vexing Men?! It’s Your RiceBall Recap

Does anyone else feel like summer just came out of nowhere? I mean, a week ago I was freezing my butt off, bundled up in blankets, sweaters, scarves, jackets and whatever else….and today it’s 80 (mofo’in) degrees! I have crazy, humidity hair! Ugh.

monica-geller1

I see spring done gave up, and decided she ain’t gonna be around for all this global warming ish. We were straight cut off this year.

boring tvAnd speaking of cut off, how goes your summer TV watching? Mid-season shows have ended and I’m stuck in limbo surfing channel to channel for a nightly prime time selection. I know it’s summer when my TV yells at me to get the hell off my couch and do something productive.

TV: “Go to the gym!”

Me: Ha! TV, you’re hilarious.

But technically, it’s not summer until all the Game of Thrones eps are over, and we have 4 more of those bad boys! I refuse to delve into my summer TV rut until after GOT is over. Somehow, deep down, I know Netflix will save me, though. Especially with OITNB on the horizon. Yay!

If you missed it, a lot has transpired over the past week or so, specifically with TV and movies. Hot topics, for me, consist of The Flash, Game of Thrones, and (although I hate to admit it) X-men: Apocalypse. Yea, I took time to see it over the weekend, and man, am I disappointed.

But before I get into that, I just wanted to let you know…this is your RiceBall Recap.
