Black Superheroes: Can you Relate or Naw?

It has been nearly a month since the new Black Panther movie teaser trailer was released, and it has nearly 9 million views and that was just in the first 2 weeks. But also the day before the first Black Panther movie poster was released. Some people liked it other people felt Marvel went too cheap or maybe his mask and a panther should’ve been added. Other people thought the poster was “too black” as it was being compared to Co Founder of The Black Panther Party Huey P. Newton and his famous picture of him sitting in the chair with the staff and gun. I personally loved the picture, I didn’t see a lot of resemblance to Huey Newton, because T’Challa aka Black panther is a King in the comic books, I more so saw it as a King on his Throne then relating to The Black Panther Party of the 60s and I am a big fan of both. Some people even criticized  the teaser trailer, when that trailer was probably one of the most smooth and well put together teasers I’ve seen in a while that made me want to watch it over and over, it’s very rare for me to want to watch a trailer over and over and get hyped every time I see it.

Now the Reason I am writing this piece is because lately I have seen many people say the mask should’ve been added, there should’ve been more to the poster for Black Panther. Well guys it’s the first poster so how Samuel L. Jackson says in Jurassic Park “Hold on to your butts”. But I feel that people are trying to downplay the idea the person behind the mask and not appreciate who T’Challa really is and why other black superheroes like Blade or Spawn seem more acceptable to the white audience per say. I mean for many of us we already knew T’Challa and that he is the Prince soon to be King of Wakanda, and also seeing him in Captain America’s Civil War film especially the iconic scene of when he removes his helmet. I want to examine why thus subject or idea of a hero like Black Panther makes not just white people uncomfortable, but even other races.

DC’s Come Up: Who’s Going to Save The Universe

These last few weeks have been big for the DC Universe, you had Arrow, The Flash, and Super girl all have there season finales, and Gotham having its season finale this week. But we can not forget this past week The Wonder Woman finally hit theaters, and has been a big hit far and wide all over. Diana aka Wonder Woman has been on everyone’s social media feeds, all over TV and just think about it, this movie barely got any marketing until these last few weeks. You barely saw any Wonder woman posters or TV spots. Then the big controversy of the Women’s only movie screening for this movie that had many men screaming in annoying agony of the screening.  I not only want to share my thoughts on the movie after seeing it Thursday night before the worldwide premiere, but I also want to share my thoughts on Arrow, The Flash and Super girl how there season finales will change the course of the new seasons that are to come.

Before going to see Wonder Woman, everyone questioned whether or not this movie could save the DC cinematic universe, some believed it because they’ve been long term fans of this character, some people like me who loved Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman believed she would do excellent, and there’s other people who still had a big question mark on this movie. For one something happened that we rarely have seen in the past with movie screenings, an all woman screening. After this announcement and hearing men couldn’t even at least sit in the theater, they took to twitter and all social media outlets to voice their opinions. To me I think this was great advertisement not because of the men getting pissed, but the simple fact how many people men and women wanted to see this movie. I mean even for a Thursday night when I went to see the movie I did not expect to see as many men in the theater or even that packed to say the least. I knew going into this movie, I would not see any montages to the old 70’s wonder woman; the theme playing in my head as I bought my ticket… “All The world is waiting for you, and the power you possess” but I knew I was excited for something that was long awaited.

Logan: The End of An Era

Yes you heard that right, “Logan” the movie  is Hugh Jackman’s last stand as Wolverine and he went out with a bang. Hugh Jackman has been  playing the role of Wolverine for over 17 years, 17 years wow that’s crazy, just let that sink in. Who do you know has played a longer character other than probably Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in mission impossible. From the moment Rogue saw Wolverine fighting in the cage match in the first X-men movie, we could not have asked for a better person to play this gritty, non heroic character who surprisingly is probably one of the most heroic when it comes down to backing the people he loves and cares for. We saw the transformation of Wolverine throughout the years of his trials and tribulations and Logan shows first hand how old age, and hardship of fighting and losing your friends can take a toll on the body.

There has been so many speculations over these last few months about would the movie be good, will we see flashbacks of the suit, all this stuff then Rotten Tomatoes hit with a 96 percent score for the movie. People lost their minds counting Rotten Tomatoes as the natural score all things good and also with an R rating many people were completely sold from hearing these few things and  from the trailers that were released. I for one was extremely excited for many reasons, but I will share the first reason before I get further into this review. I am a huge Wolverine fan, and I saw the movie was coming out March 3rd no big deal right, but my birthday is March 5th, so that made me so happy like what are the odds one of my comic book characters comes out the weekend of my birthday.

Thursday Night Double Feature

It has been almost over two weeks since I made my venture to the movie theaters to see the two anticipated movies of this month, Lego Batman Movie, and John Wick: Chapter 2. Now this is a very interesting story, my friend told me that both movies were out that day, I honestly did not know, I thought they were coming out that Friday, and my plan was going to be to sit down and write. Well my plans to write went down the toilet, and I had an off day, I went to the gym, and planned this great day for myself. Might I add I do go to the movies by myself, and I love it. Never be afraid to go to things by yourself and just enjoy your own company. I told myself if which ever movie I can see first then I’ll do that and watch the movie after if the times don’t collide and what to do you know my plan worked out perfect.

wfaNow both Lego Batman and John Wick were special for me, because Batman is my favorite superhero and loved him in the Lego movie, so as soon as I heard this movie was coming out I knew I wanted to go see it. Now for John Wick Chapter 2, I kept hearing over the last year or so if you love action movies and want to see like some crazy and amazing gun and fight scenes watch John Wick. So Last year I finally watched John Wick the first one and loved it and literally 2 weeks later or a month later they said chapter 2 was starting to film. So I’ve been waiting for both of these movies for some time, I even got a snack and a soda, which I rarely do at the movie theater since prices are so high, but that’s for another time.

Justice League Dark: The Animated Movie

Just Recently I had the opportunity to check out one of the most anticipated DC Universe Animated movie this year, Justice League Dark. Now I do not know much about the branch of the Dark arts section of Justice except for two characters such as John Constantine, still mad they cancelled the tv show, but also Zatanna, and also I have seen Etrigan off and on. Now many of us we were hit with a trailer for this movie during comic-con which had the internet and all the comic book fans buzzing. This movie definitely got me excited because the trailer right off the bat shows you, the Justice League is not going to be apart of this mission, that it will take other Justice League operatives and people with special abilities to take on this task, will show you the trailer, and we will get back to this.

This movie does have an R rating, but there is no need for it except for a few adult jokes, and maybe more blood then usual, but I would like to say I do enjoy that Comic book movies more and more are getting that R rated feel, you can tell it lets the creators branch out a little more and even give each character more dialogue to work with. Before going into this I was already going in knowing I wouldn’t see as many regular justice league characters, but this movie will surprise you, but in a good way.
