Taboo: The Fight Within

Just Recently Tom Hardy’s newest show  “Taboo” has just finished it’s first season, now surrounding this show was a bit of controversy for some people. Tom hardy plays James Delaney an English man who is supposedly half black and half white, who was lost at sea and presumed dead. Many people were mad at the supposed rumors of the show and these were only rumors that I myself heard at the time, that Tom hardy was going be called “Nigger” and that he is nowhere near half black, many people felt this was whitewashing a character. When we know many slaves and children long ago were mulatto’s and treated very different. Before I watched this show I was very skeptical even though months prior when seeing the preview and even the simple fact Tom hardy decided to do a TV show had me very excited. Very few actors who are heavily in the film industry do not seem like TV series actors, especially with viewers and how someone can instantly say your show isn’t worth a watch, only 2 minutes in with no action.

Now as a Black man I am very opened minded, but also very conscious of what I feel is whitewashing, and also what I feel is good television and what is a good film compared to a lot of critics. Now watching this show I did have a lot of questions, but I wanted to see if what people said before even watching the show was true or if they watched pilot episodes and felt it just didn’t sit well with them. Even though I know Tom hardy himself probably wouldn’t do anything to truly jeopardize his fan base. These were only rumors and minor things I heard before even watching the show, so I would just like to give sort of an overview and also my review and thoughts on this new thriller.

Miss Me?

Ladies and Gentlemen sorry for the delay, but Stewy P. Newton is back, and I have a lot to talk about and a lot to share. So first off Happy New Month, these few weeks all the way from the end of January up until now has been crazy. TV and Netflix have been jammed packed with new releases, and this is why we are I have been watching so much TV it’s crazy, I want to talk about the Netflix Original Series well more like new version of Lemony Snicket’s: A series of Unfortunate Events TV show, and also the Season 4 of Sherlock which most people believe could be the final season. So hold on this is going to be a very mysterious and intriguing adventure as we dive into these two shows.

Ever since both A Series of Unfortunate Events and Sherlock were announced the year before I have been anticipating to see the direction of both shows. Sherlock leaving us off on a cliffhanger and this new adaption to the Lemony Snicket series intrigued me.

What Netflix Gave us for the Holiday Season

So before the year 2016  is over, I had to send you guys off with a little something. Hoping everyone had a good Christmas, or Holiday. For some reason December has turned into Sci-Fi Month, from Star Wars, to the movie Passengers, to the new Alien trailer. I am not here to talk to you about those things I want to share with you some interesting movies and shows I have recently stumbled across on Netflix. I have been scanning social media from Facebook and Twitter like I normally do when I stumbled across one movie and one show that really intrigued my interest. First off I will talk to you guys about this movie called “Spectral” it is very out there and I will get into more details, and the show I ran across just scrolling down Facebook is called “The OA” I didn’t know what to think of this show when I saw the trailer, but was still very excited to understand what it was about.

alienlo

I don’t know what it is about December, but for some reason it just turns into all out Sci-Fi this and Sci-Fi that for the last few years, which I am completely with. Since I am a big fan of anything galaxy related, going to different dimensions, as long as there is a good story behind it, and the acting is good. Also hopefully in the near future we see more people of color staring in Intergalactic movies and shows that don’t have stale and old stories, but that is another conversation and another post for another time, lets jump right into it.

Black Mirror: Welcome to the Darkness

Happy New Month everyone, So I wanted to give you guys this post a while ago, but I’ve been so busy, but I wanted to talk to you guys about this new show I’ve been watching called Black Mirror. You might have heard of it these last few weeks. Now this is not a completely new show, Black Mirror is a UK based television show and has been around since 2011, but for some reason everyone has been going crazy over this series. Recently back in I believe September or August my friend she asked me if I’ve ever seen Black Mirror and that we  should binge watch it. I said I’ve never seen it, but I couldn’t find any trailers except for the season 3 trailer that came out early October which I will show later on. Me and my friend we wanted to binge the show for the season 3 premiere, now I cannot lie I saw the cover picture for the show and I said I’ve seen this title for this show a million times on Netflix and always skipped over it to watch another show, crazy how things come in full circle.

blackmir
This is the Picture I always saw on Netflix, you have seen it also.

Now I know if you have heard about this show, you have heard that it is crazy, and bugged out especially episode 1 in Season 1, and that this show makes you never want to use social media again(even though we all still do). This show truly is eye opening and if you aren’t conscience of social media and everything that goes on with the government this show broadens your mind to start accepting maybe so called “conspiracy theorist” are on to something. I want to do something a little different, I don’t want to give you guys an all out review, but I want to show a very interesting concept I found in each season and episode. I believe Black Mirror has a particular amount of themes that the directors and writers are trying to get across and I would like to hopefully touch on what I think they are.

Re:Zero: Reasons Why We Need A Second Season

This summer we were blessed with so many interesting anime. One, in particular, that caught my eye, and was one of the most interesting I’ve seen in a while, goes by the name of “Re: Zero: Starting Life in Another World”. Now, I first encountered this show by just scrolling down my timeline on Facebook and seeing a gif  on Crunchyroll’s page. I got so hyped because the fight scene was dope and kind of reminded me of Black Lagoon. So I went and looked up the show, saw pictures, and even a preview. It didn’t look anything like the gif, but I still wanted to watch this anime because it sounded very interesting. After asking one of my friends about it and continuing to contemplate it, I gave it a shot. Check out the trailer below:

Now I thoroughly enjoyed this anime; Re:zero has everything from fight scenes, to drama to love and even some very tripped out what-just-happened moments. It  has yet to be officially announced that there is a season 2, but many fans including myself, are wondering what is next, and why are there so many unanswered questions. For instance there are so many characters who have untold stories or mysteries behind their methods, leaving us wonder what could they be hiding. The season finale had a cliffhanger edge to it as if there should’ve been more – but, I mean, with 25 episodes how much more can you put in one season? So I want to give my reasons why I think  we need a season 2.

Atlanta: All About That Paper Boi

So as everybody should know by now the hit show Atlanta on FX has been going bonkers from social media, to word of mouth. One reason why I wanted to wait to do this post was because I knew that first week everyone in the world would be trying to post reviews, say what  they liked, what they didn’t like. So with  4 episodes in. I wanted to give my thoughts and some feedback on the show so far. For those who don’t know this is a show brought to you by Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino, and other various executive directors. At first I won’t say I was skeptical to watch the show, I think I was more so of like ehh I’ll catch it when I can. Like I wasn’t eager to see it, but wanted to see it because I am a fan of Donald(childish Gambino) from seeing him on Community, and also his music, so I was like this is pretty cool, I just wasn’t all the way in. But I think maybe seeing Donald & his security guards walk by me and my friends like 3 times at the Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn, it kind of changed my mind, perhaps because he was just hanging out with everyone, or it was the fact this show started to seem really cool to me.  I’ll get to more of why I felt this way about the show.

This is my first time really seeing that teaser above and that was great, but me personally I think I didn’t want to watch this show because I didn’t want it to be like every other black show. For most black people who read this they will understand what that means, it’s constantly seeing roles be portrayed that don’t seem realistic or to dragged out that makes even the average watcher would feel like that’s not me but it’s entertaining; and if it’s not entertaining it’s just plain coonery  for the white audience to laugh at it. So I think I just didn’t want that realization of here we go again, even though FX does pretty well with it’s TV shows.

Stranger Things and Voltron?.. What is this The 80’s?

Has anyone else been paying attention this summer or maybe I’m just late, but Netflix has been booming with shows and movies all summer, especially its original series and reboots. Recently I just got back into watching Netflix and over these last few weeks I heard a lot of people mention a show called “Stranger Things” I first looked at cover picture and said this looks interesting but then for some reason everyone on social media, I mean everyone was buzzing about this show. I don’t normally like following the crowd  and watch what everyone else is watching, but man am I happy I went in that direction this time. But I want to bring to you two quick reviews that I’ve been checking out of Stranger things and Voltron?…..VOLTRON!!! I KNOW RIGHT VOLTRON!! Well it is back and has a new look. Let’s get this started First

Hold the Door! The Flash Did What? And X-men Be Vexing Men?! It’s Your RiceBall Recap

Does anyone else feel like summer just came out of nowhere? I mean, a week ago I was freezing my butt off, bundled up in blankets, sweaters, scarves, jackets and whatever else….and today it’s 80 (mofo’in) degrees! I have crazy, humidity hair! Ugh.

monica-geller1

I see spring done gave up, and decided she ain’t gonna be around for all this global warming ish. We were straight cut off this year.

boring tvAnd speaking of cut off, how goes your summer TV watching? Mid-season shows have ended and I’m stuck in limbo surfing channel to channel for a nightly prime time selection. I know it’s summer when my TV yells at me to get the hell off my couch and do something productive.

TV: “Go to the gym!”

Me: Ha! TV, you’re hilarious.

But technically, it’s not summer until all the Game of Thrones eps are over, and we have 4 more of those bad boys! I refuse to delve into my summer TV rut until after GOT is over. Somehow, deep down, I know Netflix will save me, though. Especially with OITNB on the horizon. Yay!

If you missed it, a lot has transpired over the past week or so, specifically with TV and movies. Hot topics, for me, consist of The Flash, Game of Thrones, and (although I hate to admit it) X-men: Apocalypse. Yea, I took time to see it over the weekend, and man, am I disappointed.

But before I get into that, I just wanted to let you know…this is your RiceBall Recap.

Is This the End of Agent Carter?

Agent-Carter-Season-2-banner

What’s up everybody? It’s crazy that it’s already Thursday. This week has really gone by, or maybe I’m just moving slower than usual. But last Tuesday was the Agent Carter Season 2 Finale. It’s crazy. It feels like the show honestly just started, and now Season 2 is over. Wow, that was fast.  But if you haven’t gotten into the show, here’s a little summary… Agent Carter is about Peggy Carter, one of the main contributors to starting what we know now as S.H.I.E.L.D. (one of Marvels most infamous places for guarding information and protecting mutant and inhuman secrets). Now Season 1 started off a bit slow for all those who watched, but when this show got good…it got really good, especially the fight scenes. This left a lot of us intrigued to see another season.

Now Season 2… this season started off so much better than Season 1. Way more action packed and way faster in terms of getting to the action. That first episode of Season 2 was amazing. That episode alone is enough to bring someone in to keep watching. I loved that the writers and everyone did an amazing job with this season and hopefully we will get a Season 3. Hayley Atwell aka Peggy Carter did an amazing job as usual, as this season started with her and Captain Jack Thompson still tracking down Dottie aka Black widow. This leads to a very dope and amazing opening fight scene in the bank’s vault. After this Peggy takes a case in L.A. helping out her former co worker Captain Sousa, who obviously still has feelings for Peggy, and vice versa.
