DC Rebirth: The New Wave of Readers

As of late, comic books in general have sky-rocketed and are back in business. Now for many who have always read comic books or graphic novels this isn’t anything new, but for the new readers and old readers, like myself, who’ve read comic books growing up (but kind of stopped) this is huge. I just want to talk about my experience while reading the new D.C. Rebirth Comics. I have always loved comic books growing up, but I kind of strayed away, not because they were for kids or anything, but it’s almost like now a days it’s hard to find a straight up comic book store, where you can spend hours and hours reading, unless you live in an area that is known for having that outlet.  But I have always kept my ear to the comic book world, from watching movies, and going to places like midtown comics, Barnes and noble, and Newbury comics while just browsing and checking out the new comics that are out, or what everyone is reading.

But for some reason , everyone is reading graphic novels again, from old to even people who have never picked up a comic book in their life. Even though this is a D.C. piece we cannot over look the success of comic books like Moon Girl, and the popularity she is getting and  how she has also been crowned the smartest person in the Marvel Universe. And we can’t forget the most anticipated comic book in years, The Black Panther series, which is one of the top purchased series sold-out all over in the first few weeks of release. We have to ask why are so many people reading comics now? Is it because of all the Superhero movies that have hit the big screen? Is it because Fanboys are ridiculing movie goers that they know nothing like Jon Snow, and should read the series before they talk? Or  has everyone kind of finally come out of their hiding place to show the world they’ve loved Superheroes from the very beginning.

Hold the Door! The Flash Did What? And X-men Be Vexing Men?! It’s Your RiceBall Recap

Does anyone else feel like summer just came out of nowhere? I mean, a week ago I was freezing my butt off, bundled up in blankets, sweaters, scarves, jackets and whatever else….and today it’s 80 (mofo’in) degrees! I have crazy, humidity hair! Ugh.

I see spring done gave up, and decided she ain’t gonna be around for all this global warming ish. We were straight cut off this year.

boring tvAnd speaking of cut off, how goes your summer TV watching? Mid-season shows have ended and I’m stuck in limbo surfing channel to channel for a nightly prime time selection. I know it’s summer when my TV yells at me to get the hell off my couch and do something productive.

TV: “Go to the gym!”

Me: Ha! TV, you’re hilarious.

But technically, it’s not summer until all the Game of Thrones eps are over, and we have 4 more of those bad boys! I refuse to delve into my summer TV rut until after GOT is over. Somehow, deep down, I know Netflix will save me, though. Especially with OITNB on the horizon. Yay!

If you missed it, a lot has transpired over the past week or so, specifically with TV and movies. Hot topics, for me, consist of The Flash, Game of Thrones, and (although I hate to admit it) X-men: Apocalypse. Yea, I took time to see it over the weekend, and man, am I disappointed.

But before I get into that, I just wanted to let you know…this is your RiceBall Recap.

Who is Professor Zoom?

The CW’s Flash was a dream come true for me. I have fond memories of being a child, sneaking into the living room after my mom passed out on the couch with the TV on, in  hopes of catching the 90’s Flash show staring John Wesley Shipp. The Flash is also the one Comic book that I have faithfully bought each and every month, for as long as I can remember. I am proud to say that I am obsessed with all things Scarlett speedster! A big part of that is his rogues gallery. The Flash has one of the brightest and diverse group of villains out there, in my opinion, second only to Batman. But the most menacing of the bunch is Professor Zoom, not to be confused with the Reverse Flash. The TV show has further muddied these waters by switching names around, but that will be a write up for another day. I want to focus on the comic version of Zoom and all his terrifying glory!

The brightest day and blackest night…for comic book writers

GL
Since the dawn of comics, men, women and children of all colors and creeds have been drawn to the capes and tights depicted in those wonderful four color funny books. Comics throughout their inception in the 30’s, throughout the 50’s, 60’s….. basically to right now, 2016, have been created by white men. Those men would sit in their “bull pen” with their cigars and whiskey and write the adventures of all our beloved heroes and heroines.
